Fat Girls Rock

Woohoo!! The fourth book in the Redneck P.I. Twila Taunton Series is almost ready for publication. Dedicated to anyone who has ever been called 'fat' -- you really do rock!!

Here's the cover and a short piece from the first chapter:

The rumble of Harleys died. I caught a glimpse of the riders through the screen door as they dismounted and parked their bikes outside the Hogs Waller Saloon. I shaded my eyes against the bright security light as Big Bart stomped his feet on the mat and strode in with his two dogs, Sadie and Benjamin, at his heels. His leathers creaked, and a long braid hung down his back from the red, white and blue bandanna tied around his head. His biker boots made a loud clopping sound on the old wooden floors, which dipped under his weight with every step.
Members of his gang trudged in behind him, 'Justice Enforcers' inscribed in red on the backs of their leather jackets. They nodded at us and headed for the bar, the smell of cigarette smoke and engine oil following them.
My dog Scratch stood up from under my legs, and stretched.
Bart stopped at our table. "Well, if it ain't the fat girls' club," he bellowed. He clamped an oversized hand on my shoulder and I stared at the cut-off black leather glove before I looked up and glared at him through narrowed eyes.
"Who are you calling fat? I'm not fat, and neither is LaMercy or Ena." I turned my gaze to each of my companions and nodded. They both nodded back. Fat was a word that's always pissed me off, but this was a delicate situation. You don't want to get on the wrong side of Bart Drummond.
He held up his hands in front of him, palms facing me, and my eyes followed the inked wolves climbing up his muscled arms to his shoulders. "Oh, no. Don’t get me wrong, Twila. Fat is good. What man doesn't like a little padding? I meant it in a good way." His gaze strayed bald-facedly from my boobs, to Ena's and then to LaMercy's. "You ladies all got curves where women are supposed to have 'em," he growled in his deep baritone voice. "Fat girls rock, man."

I was at a loss for words, which is unusual for me. Luckily, Scratch grabbed the limelight when Sadie growled and snapped at him. "Yeah, good girl. You don’t need no-one sticking their cold nose there, do you?" Bart rasped. He turned towards the bar. "What's a man got to do to get a drink around here?" he said.
"Coming right up!" Gasser, an annoying grin on his face, slid a 24oz glass of draft beer across the pitted wooden counter top. Bart crossed the room in three strides, grabbed it and swallowed half of it down in one gulp. He swiped a hand through his beard and licked the foam from his moustache.
Despite the open ducting in the high roof, the Hogs Waller Saloon had a cozy feel about it. Stuffed animal heads and deer antlers hung on the walls, together with old photographs of Quisby, home-made wooden plaques with redneck words of wisdom on them, a couple of old guns, and other unrecognizable objects. The dusty bottles on the shelves almost hid the mirror behind the bar, and glasses hanging from their racks reflected the yellow beams from the low lights. Frying smells from the kitchen hung in the air, and the old air conditioner rasped and groaned as it struggled to cool the room in the still sweltering Alabama summer night.
As usual, Jimmie Lewis, the town's most dedicated drunk, slouched in the corner on a bar stool, and coyote ugly Lilly Belle Groat, the town's most recognizable working girl, stood beside him, hoping for some action.
LaMercy, Ena and I were parked at a table in the restaurant side of the wide room, our drinks in front of us on the red and white checked plastic tablecloth. We hadn't ordered dinner yet, because we were waiting for Aunt Essie.
"Maybe we have put on some pounds," LaMercy, always the practical one said. I didn't like the way she was gawping at me.
"Maybe one or two," I conceded. "But no more than that." I frowned and looked down. My baggy navy blue T-shirt still fit comfortably, although I had to admit to myself it had been a struggle to get into some of my jeans and shorts recently. In fact, now that I thought about it, the jeans I had on were hurting my stomach. I figured they had shrunk in the wash.
I checked out LaMercy. Had she put on weight? I always thought her face was more angular, but with her big Afro hair it was difficult to be sure. She almost always wore dresses, as she was doing now, so a little extra padding wouldn't be so easy to see.
"Yeah, but fat. That's a big word," Ena said. Her boobs had definitely gotten bigger. How come I hadn't noticed that before? They bulged out of the sides of her pink tank top. Was that all boob or could it really be fat rolls? I remember thinking she was buying her shorts a size too small, but I couldn't confirm that while she was sitting down.
We all stared at Bart's definitely-not-fat ass as he ambled across the room to join the others in the smoky haze that hung over the pool tables. No one was supposed to smoke in the bar, but who was gonna tell one of them to go stand outside with the humidity and bugs? It sounded like it was drizzling out there now, anyhow. Someone had closed the solid wooden door, but I could hear the clank of raindrops hitting the metal roof over the buzz of conversation.
"That is one heck of a man," Ena, the only one of us who was truly single said. "No fat there. It's all solid muscle. He is built."
I knew LaMercy was thinking it too, and so was I. He surely was a delectable mountain of maleness. "Why don't you go make a play for him?" I said to Ena. When I say Ena is 'truly' single, I mean although I am not married, and have no plans to ever marry, Harland O'Connor is my man. He has a special place in my heart—and other parts of me that I will not mention here. Just thinking about him makes things happen to those parts.

Ena's eyes went wide and she fanned herself with a napkin. "I am in the market for a man. I'm totally, epically ready, and just thinking about doing it with him is making me all hot and bothered. Do you think he's as big there as everywhere else?"

Available soon on Amazon. Meanwhile, check out the others in the series:

A Convenient Marriage by Maggie Tideswell -- Preview

The Story Behind the Story

This is the first post in my new project in which authors talk about the story behind their book and what motivated them to write it.

My friend and fellow romance author, Maggie Tideswell has a new paranormal romance in the works and I found her explanation of the idea behind the story fascinating. Hope you do too.

Maggie writes:

The idea of two complete strangers getting hitched has always intrigued me, for one simple reason—why would they do such a thing? Could such a relationship succeed? By successful relationship, I understand not only the longevity of the marriage…but is it possible for the participants to actually fall in love with each other in such a strange arrangement? I write romance, after all, and love is found in the most unexpected places.

A Convenient Marriage grew over a number of years. The basic story was simple—a divorcee with two children, an ex-husband being difficult over visitation, as well as a fiancée unable to commit.

Holly’s friends suggested that she needed a new husband, placing an advertisement in the paper for one behind her back. Joshua was struck by a simple plan when he saw the ad and responded to it. Boring stuff, huh?

The problem was motivation. Why would Holly marry a man she’d never met, and why would Joshua respond to an ad for a husband, then actually propose to a woman he had never clapped eyes on? So, in came the dawdling fiancée, Nicole. Both Holly and Joshua were justified in not planning the marriage to be a real one, because they each had an agenda of their own, but Nicole was the injured party. For their plan to succeed, they had to marry—the real kind, down to that all-important piece of paper married—and they had to seem to be totally in love with each other. Holly needed to be married to take her ex on for custody of her children, while if Joshua wanted to motivate his reluctant fiancée into church, he had to be off limits to Nicole. That would make him very attractive to her again, and maybe she would even set a date for their wedding.

And here comes the ‘but’. Holly and Joshua’s plans go awry from the moment they meet on the steps of the chapel where their fake marriage is to take place, when both recognize the immediate attraction. Back at Joshua’s wine estate—yes, he is a rich landowner where Holly expected him to be a pauper—Holly meets Joshua’s mother, his brother and sister-in-law, and Nicole, the fiancée, who found out about Joshua’s duplicity in a room full of people. No one can blame Nicole for being a tad upset. Or can they? To add to Holly’s woes, she seems to have acquired a ‘ghost’ demanding she tell a story.

Amidst Nicole’s shenanigans, Joshua’s mother’s disapproval, Holly’s ex’s aggression, and the ghost following Holly around, will these two accomplish what they set out to do? Or will life get in the way?

Joshua’s and Holly’s journey through the uncharted seas of a blind marriage, where no rules apply, is a stormy one.

A Convenient Marriage will be published on October 13, 2016.

Maggie Tideswell is a South African author with a passion for romance. All over the world people are falling in love, even the birds and the bees are doing it. Ghosts just can't seem to leave her alone and she combines things that can't be explained, sweaty bodies and rumpled beds in a way that will make your toes curl and your hair stand on end.

Review of Lost by D. M. Thornton

Lost by D.M. Thornton is a masterpiece, and a truly great debut novel.

In the beginning, 'Lost' resembles the TV show with the same name—a plane crashes in the middle of nowhere and most of the occupants lose their lives.

The survivors are lost, yes, and yet the word 'lost' holds a double entendre as readers will discover at the end.

It is essentially a love story, and the author's depiction of the progression of the process of the two primary characters falling in love and eventually realizing they can't live without each other can only be described as masterful. The love-making scenes are graphic yet tastefully written, leaving the reader in no doubt that the couple love one another deeply.

If you love romance and enjoy a fast-paced book that moves forward with each page-turn, you will enjoy this story.

One word of warning -- the cliff-hanger at the end. While it clearly shows that a sequel is in the works, and will leave you hungering for more, you may feel disappointed if you are accustomed to reading romance, in which there is always a happily ever after or happy for now ending.

Virgo's Vice Cover Reveal

I just received my cover for the next story in my Zodiac Series, Virgo's Vice. As always, Soul Mate Publishing's artists did an amazing job and captured the essence of the story, which is a romantic suspense thriller set in Africa.

Lexie King can't believe she did this to herself -- she signed up to work as a camera operator in Allan Dockery's new survival type reality show.

She wanted to prove she could break her reliance on anti-anxiety meds, and make something of herself. But she had no way of knowing he would be there. The monster.

Now all she wants is to get away--as far away as possible. But how? They're one stop past nowhere in Africa.

When shocking events start to happen, she draws comfort from Jake, the producer's chocolate lab, and cowboy contestant Billy Murphy, who makes her laugh at the darkest of times, and heats up more than her heart with his touch...

Scheduled for release in October 2015.

Review - On Angels Wings by Heather Adams

This is a wonderful debut novel, and the first in a series. The author has a masterful way with words, and has woven true historical events into this period romantic suspense novel about a love that endures everything.

In eighteenth century Britain, a mother dies and leaves her child, Angela, alone and without anyone to support her. Her philandering and heavy drinking stepfather steals all the money and sells her to a brothel. Being a spirited young woman, Angela refuses to accept her fate, and in time, she meets Duke Monroe Enderby, and discovers the delights of falling in love.

The two are secretly married, only to be torn apart by injustice, war, and a jealous servant.

With Monroe away fighting the war, Angela gives birth to a son, Weylin. Years pass, and in time, they travel to the New World, where Weylin becomes involved with the Sons of Liberty.

This story is a must read. Follow the two lovers as they live their own Odyssey. Will they ever be reunited? And what is the secret of the wolves?

Valentine's Day -- Dedicated to Romance

With Valentine's Day being just around the corner this seemed like the perfect time to write about my passion--romance.

So what exactly is romance?

Romance is a noun. Put an 'A' in front of it , as in they had a romance, it means a relationship or attachment that is usually between lovers, but it may also be used in an abstract way to describe someone's passion, as in she had a lifetime romance with historical homes.

Valentine's Day has been so commercialized that people have lost its true purpose and today they give gifts to anyone they love, whether it be a lover, a child, a sibling, a parent or even a friend, but true romance between lovers is to do with the emotional side of love. It may include passion, excitement, allure, and desire among other things, but it is also encompassed in the little things lovers do to show their affection.

He may spontaneously pick a bunch of wildflowers and present them to her while taking a walk, or she may turn the lights down low and set the dinner table with candles and include a bottle of champagne with the meal. Little romantic acts show your partner that you care, and keep the romance alive in a relationship.

Here are a few ideas for putting the romance back into your life--or keeping it there this Valentine's Day.

  1. If you plan to ask her to marry you, get down on your knees (that is so romantic and never goes out of style) and pop the question some place crazy on Valentine's Day.
  2. Fill your Jacuzzi with something fragrant, and light some candles, or go skinny-dipping on a deserted beach. Or, if it's cold, light the fire and lay a blanket on the carpet in front of the fireplace. There's something very romantic about real wood fires.
  3. Take him to a wildly expensive restaurant on Valentine's Day night and pay for the dinner. Remember, a little champagne buzz does wonders for romance.
  4. Send her dozens of red roses and a giant teddy bear.
  5. Get tickets to his favorite sporting event. It may not seem like a romantic idea, but it will show him how much you care about his happiness.
  6. Buy your special someone something that sparkles--like diamonds or any jewelry.
  7. Chocolates have always been a favorite, especially for women, but be sure she isn't trying to lose weight before giving them to her. Chocolate covered strawberries go well with bubbly.
  8. Do something outrageously crazy, like skydiving, or take a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride in the moonlight.
  9. Send an anonymous Valentine's Card to someone you secretly admire.
  10. Buy a couple of cans of whipped cream and let your imagination run wild...

So how about some comments about what you do to make Valentine's Day romantic with that special someone. Don't forget to get your lover in the mood -- buy them a romance novel.

I;m getting excited about my next novel in the Zodiac Series, Aquarius Addiction, now that the cover is done.

FBI psychic Arlette's Xylander's life changes dramatically when her mysterious Aunt Lucie, whom she has never met, dies, and bequeaths two things to Arlette--her country home on the banks of Bayou LeGue, and an ancient spell book.
